Leadership best practices

One study (Figure 4-2) examined correlations between the transformational leadership style and the best practices. We found a significant positive correlation between subordinate ratings of each element of transformational leadership and each leadership best practice. As we said earlier, leadership best practices consist of a set of specific behaviors and activities that safety leaders engage in effectively, while style is about how safety leaders perform these activities.

This means that once we are clear about what we value and are in touch with the passion that underlies our values, we must translate this into behavior. Leadership behavior has two facets wkat we do (leadership best practices) and how we do it (leadership style). We ll discuss style here and best practices in chapter 5. 

Using a 360-degree diagnostic instrument such as the LDI gives the leader a picture of where to strengthen his or her safety leadership. Doing so requires focusing on the appropriate leadership best practices—the subject of the next chapter. 

Much has been written about accountability, the last of the leadership best practices. In the safety area, what employees and team members are held accountable for matters greatly. Holding people accountable for incident frequency rates only makes sense if the numbers are statistically valid. More important, upstream activities that produce safety results should be measured and accountabilities established for them.

When used correctly in combination with the other leadership best practices, accountability builds culture. 

How can a leader know where he or she stands in terms of these best practices We have found that the most effective way to measure leadership best practices (and leadership style) is by systematically asking people around the leader about their perceptions of the leader. This makes sense because the growth of organizational culture depends on how others experience and internalize the leader s influence.

This antecedent may be related to a low score for the leadership best practice of collaboration, the tendency to solve problems oneself rather than involve others in their solution. 

The coach then reviewed the feedback report with the leader and helped him or her develop a coaching action plan. This plan identified areas for the leader to concentrate on, drawing on the critical behaviors, the actions needed to drive support for NASA s values, and the leadership best practices. Once the plan was developed, the coach gave the leader guidance in implementing it. 

To help leaders understand which types of behavior represented strengths, and which represented areas for improvement, we gave each leader his or her LDI scores. Leaders attended a workshop to review and discuss the results and to develop individual action plans aimed at increasing their use of leadership behaviors that supported the organization s values.
