D layered compounds as well. A related method for the synthesis of WS2 nanotubes is to first synthesize crystalline and long W18049 nanowhiskers, and subsequently sulfidize these nano whiskers (10,31). This method yields large amounts of very long (30 (t) WS2 nanotubes, often with nonclosed caps. 

Another vanadium oxide that has received much attention is LiVaOs, which has a layer structure composed of octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal ribbons that can be swelled just like other layered compounds and can intercalate lithium. Here again, the method of preparation is important to its electrochemical characteristics. Curved structures are not only limited to carbon and the dichalcogenides of Mo and W. Perhaps the most well-known example of a tube-like structure with diameters in the nm range is formed by the asbestos mineral (chrysotil) whose fibrous characteristics are determined by the tubular structure of the fused tetrahedral and octahedral layers. The synthesis of meso-porous silica with well-defined pores in the 2-20 nm range was reported by Beck and Kresge.6 The synthetic strategy involved the self-assembly of liquid crystalline templates. The pore size in zeolitic and other inorganic porous solids is varied by a suitable choice of the template. However, in contrast to the synthesis of porous compounds, the synthesis of nanotubes is somewhat more difficult.

Since in most cases the mixed layered compounds are metastable phase, they are not easy to be synthesized by using a normal method. Soft chemical method is a powerful method for the synthesis of such metastable phases. Some mixed layered compounds have been synthesized by insertion of metal hydroxides into clay compounds with cation-exchange and pH titration methods, and it has been also found that these mixed layered compounds exhibit characteristics differing from the metal hydroxides and the clay precursors [15-17]. The investigation of the formation of metastable phosphate phases under hydrothermal conditions has shown the different factors that control synthesis of a specific compound [14]. Among these factors are the molar ratio P Ti in the reaction mixture, the concentration of phosphoric acid and pH. This paper reports the synthesis of a novel layered compound, Ti202H(P04)[(NH4)2P04]2, under mild hydrothermal conditions in the system Ti(IV)-H3P04-(NH2)2C0-H20 and data on its characterization.

The multi wall hollow WS2 nanotubes obtained in this process are quite perfect in shape, which has a favorable effect on some of their physical and electronic properties.
