A novel approach to RAFT emulsion polymerization has recently been reported.461529 In a first step, a water-soluble monomer (AA) was polymerized in the aqueous phase to a low degree of polymerization to form a macro RAFT agent. A hydrophobic monomer (BA) was then added under controlled feed to give amphiphilic oligomers that form micelles. These constitute a RAFT-containing seed. Continued controlled feed of hydrophobic monomer may be used to continue the emulsion polymerization. The process appears directly analogous to the self-stabilizing lattices approach previously used in macromonomer RAFT polymerization (Section 9.5.2). Both processes allow emulsion polymerization without added surfactant. [Pg.521]

Water-borne coating systems have been the focus of significant research in recent years, which continues to be driven by tighter environmental regulations. Aqueous based dispersions of polymeric lattices provide a viable alternative to organic... [Pg.405]

Thallium(I) hydride has been identified spectroscopically in the products of an electric discharge in hydrogen at a thallium cathode, or from thallium and atomic hydrogen.343 An unstable polymeric solid has also been reported.344 The borohydride TIBH4 can be obtained by reacting Tl1 compounds with LiBHU, and T1A1H4 is formed similarly 344 the borohydride, which has an ionic lattice, can also be prepared from KBH4 and aqueous TlNOs-345... [Pg.170]

In Eq. (10), E nt s(u) and Es(in) are the s=x,y,z components of the internal electric field and the field in the dielectric, respectively, and p u is the Boltzmann density matrix for the set of initial states m. The parameter tmn is a measure of the line-width. While small molecules, N<pure solid show well-defined lattice-vibrational spectra, arising from intermolecular vibrations in the crystal, overlap among the vastly larger number of normal modes for large, polymeric systems, produces broad bands, even in the crystalline state. When the polymeric molecule experiences the molecular interactions operative in aqueous solution, a second feature further broadens the vibrational bands, since the line-width parameters, xmn, Eq. (10), reflect the increased molecular collisional effects in solution, as compared to those in the solid. These general considerations are borne out by experiment. The low-frequency Raman spectrum of the amino acid cystine (94) shows a line at 8.7 cm- -, in the crystalline solid, with a half-width of several cm-- -. In contrast, a careful study of the low frequency Raman spectra of lysozyme (92) shows a broad band (half-width 10 cm- -) at 25 cm- -,... [Pg.15]

Emulsion polymerization presents similar processing difficulties to those of suspension polymerization. The product has to be recovered, in this case usually by coagulation, and then washed and dried. Again it may be difficult to remove all traces of the surfactant, etc., used to stabilize the emulsion, as with the product from suspension polymerization. However, for some applications, such as for latex (water-based) paints and carpet adhesives, the aqueous product from emulsion polymerization may be used directly. For applications, such as these, it is possible to produce lattices (latexes) containing as high as 50% solids. [Pg.720]

Latex la- teks [NS latic. latex, from L. fluid] (1835) (pi lattices or latexes) n. (1) An emulsion of a polymeric substance in an aqueous medium. (2) The sap of the hevea (rubber) tree and other plants, or emulsions prepared from the same. Latices of interest to the coatings and plastics industry are based mainly on styrene-butadiene co-polymers, polystyrene, acrylics, and vinyl polymers and co-polymers. (3) Fine dispersion of rubber or resin, natural or synthetic, in water the synthetic is made by emulsion polymerization. Latex and emulsion are often used synonymously in the paint industry. Emulsified monomers once polymerized become solids or plasticized gel particles and not emulsions but aqueous suspensions. The preparation of polyurethane lattices is possible in several ways. In one instance special monomers are polymerized in an aqueous medium to produce a thermoplastic polyurethane emulsion. Or thermoplastic polyurethanes made in solution or dissolved in solvents are emulsified in water, then solvent is removed. Or an isocyanate-terminated urethane prepolymer, possibly with hydrophilic branches, is blocked with an appropriate isocyanate blocking agent, and emulsified in water together with a crosslinking agent. [Pg.239]
