Quality Control Records. Accurate quality control records are of utmost importance and may be required by law, as in the pharmaceutical industry. A few years ago, mandatory Good Manufacturing Practices were proposed for the cosmetic industry. Although the proposal was later dropped, many manufacturers go by the rules worked out at that time for laboratory testing and record keeping. The food industry also requires extensive testing and record keeping. [Pg.124]

During WWII, extensive testing of HD was undertaken (by the U.S. Army) for the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of decontamination and protective equipment. Volunteers in such tests were found to have increased posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD 17% prevalence and 33% subdiagnostic PTSD prevalence) when evaluated 50 years later (Schnurr et al., 1996). The number of exposures to the gas was predictive of lifetime PTSD. No acute exposures to HD or immediate problems were reported. McDonough and Romano, in Chapter 4 of this book, discuss reports of the human volunteer experiments done in the United Kingdom over a 50 year period. They reported that there was no evidence that exposure of volunteers to low doses of nerve agents resulted in any adverse medical sequelae, to include psychiatric symptoms. [Pg.630]

In the above consideration, the surface tension, Of, has been introduced ad hoc. Its measurement is non-trivial since equilibrium crystals are usually extended chain crystals with a large lateral extension, i.e. /x M, so that the shape factor cannot be directly obtained. Usually, the value for af is inferred from the melting line of the non-equilibrium crystal according to a Gibbs-Thompson approach, see [14]. I note that in this case neither the surface tension can be truly assumed to be an equilibrium property, nor can the validity of the Gibbs-Thompson extrapolation be tested independently. The reliable formulae and extensive test results for polymer and fibre-reinforced composites are scarce. Simple relations for the prediction for shrinkage and creep of ordinary concretes for application in structural design were given already in CEB-FIP Model Code (1990) with coefficients to allow for actual conditions. Later, so-called Model B3 was recommended by ACI (1999) and extensively discussed by Bazant and Baweja (1995). A sHghtly different approach was proposed in EN 1992 (2004) and detailed comments may be found in Vandewalle (2000). [Pg.382]
