Often this is possible in the very last process step. Most often once the desired pharmachemical is formed, it is then put through a recrystallization step to achieve the high purity level usually demanded. The key is for the crude material to be put into solution and either simply crystallized or carbon treated and then crystallized. A natural opportunity is when the material is dissolved in the final step.
