Lithium-ion battery packs generally consist of modules coupled in series and/or parallel, and modules in turn consist of series and/or parallel coupled cells. The assembly process is shown schematically in Figure 14.13. The capacity fading of low-capacity lithium-ion batteries is mainly related to the positive electrode material. However, when the capacitance is large, the thermal dissipation is important since it also affects the cycling life, apart from the safety. Consequently, it is imperative when using such batteries to apply thermal dissipation technology, such as water or wind cooling. 

Hard carbons were synthesized by carbonizing various combinations of phenolic resin precursors in order to obtain a material with a structure suitable to be used as the anode material in lithium ion battery systems, i.e. a carbon with a large pore volume and small pore openings. The lithium ion capacities of thus obtained carbons were also measured. From the obtained results, strategies to obtain hard carbons with large reversible capacities and small irreversible capacities are proposed.
