At the Ohio State University (OSU), the Urban Landscape Ecology Project (ULEP) and all of its affiliated faculty and staff have been a source of constant help and inspiration, especially John Cardina who believes weeds are nature too. Susan Clayton at College of Wooster has been a terrific partner in this research, as has ULEP s guiding spirit, Parwinder Grewal. [Pg.197]

Epidemiology of Anthrax and Landscape Ecology of Bacillus anthracis... [Pg.59]

Figure 1. A working model of the landscape ecology of Bacillus anthracis and the hypotheses of transmission pathways. Solid arrows indicate established transmission pathways between bacilli and animals. Dashed arrows represent hypothesized or poorly understood transmission pathways. This chapter is focused primarily on B. anthracis landscape ecology so spores are outlined. Figure 1. The bulk of the analyses presented in this chapter focuses on the landscape ecology perspective and aims to define the potential geographic distribution of B. anthracis in the lower 48 states of the United States, under both current ecological conditions and a future climate-change scenario, and across the country of Mexico, where surveillance data on this disease are lacking. [Pg.63]

As to the approach of land use classes, different classification systems have been proposed, based, for example, on the lUCN classification of five land use classes ranging from natural systems to systems degraded by pollution and loss of soil or vegetation. The respective classification systems are derived from the discipline of landscape ecology they account for the naturalness of land and are based on the so-called concept of hemeroby [21]. [Pg.199]
