Ketchup bottle

While potential solutions for maximizing the barrier performance of SELAR OH Plus in blow molded bottles have been identified, the product has not found commercial acceptance in containers such as squeezable ketchup bottles. The mica imparts a slight yellow color to the resin which the consumer finds objectionable. [Pg.236]

Often oncologists can t tell until the chemicals have had a chance to do their job (or not). So you sit in the doctor s office, enduring a close, personal relationship with an IV line to your vein. After several weeks or months of these visits, you may be sent for a PET/CT scan and worry yourself sick until you get the results. By then your hair has fallen out. Vomiting has become a way of life. You can no longer feel the bottom of your feet. And, yes, you are tired of finding the ketchup bottle in the freezer. [Pg.233]

Technology to successfully produce multilayer injection blow molded bottles is much newer than that to produce multilayer extrusion blow molded bottles. Heinz Inc. s ketchup bottle was the first U.S. example (Fig. 12.22). The use of PET bottles made by coinjection blow molding has grown rapidly. As is the case for coextrusion blow molding, the key is production of the parison. Once the multilayer parison is produced, the remainder of the process is essentially the same as for single layer materials. Even stretch blow molding can be used. [Pg.329]

Two techniques are used for producing the multilayer injection molded preforms. The technology used for the Heinz PET/EVOH ketchup bottle involves simultaneous injection of two or more resins into the mold cavity in such a way that they remain in distinct layers. The second process involves a multiple set of preform molds, with a single resin injected in each step. [Pg.329]

As was the case for ketchup bottles, most uses of coinjection blow molding have the aim of improving the barrier characteristics of the container, to extend the shelf life, and to better preserve the flavor, aroma, or other characteristics of the product. Reheat stretch blow molding is the most common process, with three to five layers of resin forming the parison. The skin layers, both inside and outside. [Pg.329]

Multilayer injection blow-molded containers have been available for a much shorter time than multilayer extrusion blow-molded containers, as development of the process was more difficult. However, these too are now available. A prominent example is multilayer polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based ketchup bottles, which contain three layers of PET, and two layers of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) as an oxygen barrier. [Pg.147]

In contrast, when Heinz introduced PET ketchup bottles, the company paid explicit attention to ensuring that the bottles were compatible with existing PET... [Pg.165]

For multilayer materials such as coextrusions, plastic chips may themselves contain multiple materials. In such cases, a more complex approach may be needed if the materials are to be separated. In a few cases, chipping and grinding can be used to separate the materials. These fall into the microsorting category and have already been discussed. One example is the PET/EVOH ketchup bottles, which were designed without an adhesive layer between the PET and EVOH. When the bottle is chipped and the chips are washed, the PET and EVOH separate, and most of the EVOH is removed in the rinse step. [Pg.509]

In order to tap the commercial applications of LCP in packaging, processing must achieve efficient use of the high-performance polymer. There are many high value polymers and other materials that are used in thin layers. A prime example is ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), a super barrier material used as a thin layer in coextruded film and multilayer containers such as ketchup bottles. Other examples are coatings, such as metal, glass, and polymeric coatings. LCP used in thin multilayer constructions should compete well with these other materials. [Pg.345]
