Thomas Charnock was bom at Faversham (Kent), either in the year 1524 or in 1526. After some travels over England he settled at Oxford, carrying on experiments in Alchemy. In 1557 he wrote his Breviary of Philosophy. This work is almost entirely autobiographical, describing Chamock s alchemistic experiences. He tells us that he was initiated into the mysteries of the Hermetic Art by a certain James S. of Salisbury he also had another master, an old blind man, who on his death-bed instmcted Charnock. [Pg.52]

The main, currently used, surface complexation models (SCMs) are the constant capacitance, the diffuse double layer (DDL) or two layer, the triple layer, the four layer and the CD-MUSIC models. These models differ mainly in their descriptions of the electrical double layer at the oxide/solution interface and, in particular, in the locations of the various adsorbing species. As a result, the electrostatic equations which are used to relate surface potential to surface charge, i. e. the way the free energy of adsorption is divided into its chemical and electrostatic components, are different for each model. A further difference is the method by which the weakly bound (non specifically adsorbing see below) ions are treated. The CD-MUSIC model differs from all the others in that it attempts to take into account the nature and arrangement of the surface functional groups of the adsorbent. These models, which are fully described in a number of reviews (Westall and Hohl, 1980 Westall, 1986, 1987 James and Parks, 1982 Sparks, 1986 Schindler and Stumm, 1987 Davis and Kent, 1990 Hiemstra and Van Riemsdijk, 1996 Venema et al., 1996) are summarised here. [Pg.256]

James Kent wrote to me about his own feelings regarding DMT. Kent is the former editor of Psychedelic Illumination magazine, former publisher of Trip Magazine, and is now curator of tripzine.com. He told me that he has frequently experimented with DMT in the past, has interviewed and spent time with the late Terence McKenna, is friends... [Pg.104]

My colleague James Kent would like to see how people with Charles Bonnet syndrome react to Pindolol, which is a blocker for 5HT2A, a molecular brain receptor. Pindolol administration can terminate the DMTverse immediately. What effect would this have on the Bonnetverse ... [Pg.118]

The psychoactive compound ketamine can cause profound time distortions. According to writer James Kent, when the users enter a dissociative or emergenf state, time slows to a shuddering, thugging crawl—each moment stretching out into a sea of infinity and rolls sluggishly into the next. Seconds become minutes, minutes become hours, and eventually, in the peak, time ceases to have any meaning whatsoever. All branches of linear time bend in on themselves and collapse into a timeless and eternal state of simultaneous existence. ... [Pg.213]

Homeopathic materia medica and repertory were further enriched by the contribution from James Tyler Kent (1849-1916), E.A. Farrington (1847-1885), C. Von Boenninghausen (1785-1864), and others. The sixth edition of Organon was published in 1921, long after the death of Hahnemann. [Pg.1]

Charnock was born in Kent, either in Faversham or the Isle of Thanet, probably in the year 1524. Charnock was a laboratory assistant to an alchemist named James Sauler, who passed on the secret to Charnock on his deathbed in 1554. However, Charnock suffered a major setback on NewYear s Day 1555, when a fire destroyed his laboratory. His fortunes revived when he was taught by one of Ripley s pupils, William Holloweye, the last prior of Bath Abbey before the dissolution of the monasteries. [Pg.68]

Kent et al. (1986) have tabulated reported TL intrinsic constants and , values for a variety of metal oxyhydroxides of Al, Si, Fe, and Ti. More recently. Smith and Jenne (1988,1991) reevaluated published TL modeling of adsorption by ferric oxyhydroxide solids and by 5-Mn02. Their analysis led to a set of intrinsic constants based on measurement and estimation that have been reproduced in Tables 10.12 and 10.13. The intrinsic constants in the tables were derived independent of values for C[ chosen by others. Few studies have applied TL modeling to adsorption by clays, although James and Parks (1982) and Mahoney and Langmuir (1991) TL-modeled alkali metal and alkaline earth adsorption by clays, including beidellite, illite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite. [Pg.383]
