We must now turn our attention to the lives and teachings of the alchemists of the period under consideration, treating them, as far as possible, in chronological order whence the first alchemist to come under our notice is Thomas Charnock. [Pg.52]

Thomas Charnock was bom at Faversham (Kent), either in the year 1524 or in 1526. After some travels over England he settled at Oxford, carrying on experiments in Alchemy. In 1557 he wrote his Breviary of Philosophy. This work is almost entirely autobiographical, describing Chamock s alchemistic experiences. He tells us that he was initiated into the mysteries of the Hermetic Art by a certain James S. of Salisbury he also had another master, an old blind man, who on his death-bed instmcted Charnock. [Pg.52]

Much is known about the life of Thomas Charnock, as he wrote an autobiography in verse detailing his pursuit of the Stone. He was not a churchman, being an unlettered scholar . [Pg.67]

English adept who is also said to have studied on Rhodes with the Knights of St John. He is responsible for transmitting the secret (perhaps indirectly) to both Thomas Norton and Thomas Charnock. See Chapter 2. [Pg.119]

Other works of the sixteenth century include Thomas Charnock s Breviary of Philosophy and the additaminta thereto, and Enigma in 1572. He also wrote a memorandum in which he states that he attained the transmuting powder when his hairs were white. [Pg.27]
