Kainate receptors neocortex

Regional distribution studies indicate that the highest density of kainate receptor occurs in the stratum lucidum of the hippocampus (mossy fiber system) and in the inner and outer layers of the neocortex. The highest density of NMDA receptors is found in the hippocampus, stratum radiatum, and in the striatum, thalamus, and cerebral cortex. The distribution of AMPA receptors is similar to that of NMDA receptors, but in the cerebellum AMPA receptors predominate in the molecular layer...

Kainate receptor subunit gene expression in the neocortex is illustrated in Fig. 4. KAl mRNA is also in the underlying corpus callosum white matter tracts (Werner et al., 1991 Wisden and Seeburg, 1993a Bahn et al., 1994). By contrast, KA2 transcripts are abundant in the neocortex, particularly in layers II/III and V/VI (Herb et al., 1992 Wisden and Seeburg, 1993a Bahn... 

It seems likely that kainate receptors therefore have a dendritic, or more likely a presynaptic, location. In this position they presumably act as autoreceptors. There is supportive evidence of this in the literatiire both from electrophysiological studies on dorsal root fibres and from release experiments [see 101 102]. The NBQX resistant component in grease seal preparations of the neocortex [101] and spinal cord [102] are compatible with this, since depolarisation of terminals would contribute to the signal seen in such experiments.
