Justice, summary

The first part of this book is dedicated to a discussion of mass spectrometry (MS) instrumentation. We start with a list of basic definitions and explanations (Chapter 1). Chapter 2 is devoted to the mass spectrometer and its building blocks. In this chapter we describe in relative detail the most common ion sources, mass analyzers, and detectors. Some of the techniques are not extensively used today, but they are often cited in the MS literature, and are important contributions to the history of MS instrumentation. In Chapter 3 we describe both different fragmentation methods and several typical tandem MS analyzer configurations. Chapter 4 is somewhat of an outsider. Separation methods is certainly too vast a topic to do full justice in less than twenty pages. However, some separation methods are used in such close alliance with MS that the two techniques are always referred to as one combined analytical tool, for example, GC-MS and LC-MS. In effect, it is almost impossible to study the MS literature without coming across at least one separation method. Our main goal with Chapter 4 is, therefore, to facilitate an introduction to the MS literature for the reader by providing a short summary of the basic principles of some of the most common separation methods that have been used in conjunction with mass spectrometry.

Henry L. Ellsworth, son of Oliver Ellsworth, a Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, was bom in 1791 at Windsor, Conn. He was in charge of the Patent Office from 1835 to 1845. His annual reports on Patent Office activities are excellent summaries which were not limited to problems of the Patent Office, but included statistics and discussions of our industrial, agricultural, and economic progress.

The Blue Book consists of two parts Part I sets forth the several statutes pertaining to the antitrust laws Part II presents in chronological order a summary of all cases which have been instituted by the Department of Justice under those laws from 1890 to the closing date of the particular edition of the Blue Book. Each summary contains a statement of the charges made in the case, the result of court proceedings, and the status of pending cases. The cases are comprehensively indexed both by case name and by subject matter.

The blanket suppression of LSD and other psychedelics has been a complete disaster in that (1) it has seriously hindered proper research on these drugs (2) it has created a profitable black market as it has raised the price (3) it has embarrassed the police with an impossible assignment (4) it has created the false fascination with fruit that is forbidden (5) it has seriously impeded the normal work of courts of justice, and herded thousands of noncriminal types of people into already overcrowded prisons, which, as everyone knows, are schools of sodomy and for crime as a profession (6) it has made users of psychedelics more susceptible to paranoia more than ever (For purposes of this summary I am including marijuana and hashish as psychedelics, though they do not have the potency of LSD)... This brief summary of peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence in no way does justice to the topic and the interested reader is urged to consult the more comprehensive accounts cited in this chapter. If and when water-soluble oxalate esters become readily available, there is no doubt that these labels will be adapted to the types of assay that have formed the main subject matter for this article, viz., immunoassays, nucleic acid and gene probe assays, and clinical chemistry assays.

A dilatometer (Latin dilatatio, an extension, and metmm, a measure) is an instrument to measure volume or length of a substance as a function of temperature. A summary description of the technique is given in Fig. 6.1. When one makes a volume or length measurement under tension or load, one applies the term thermomechanical analysis, abbreviated TMA, to the technique. Instrumentation and applications are described in Sects. 6.2-6.5. If the applied stress or the dimension of the substance varies as a function of time during measurement, the technique is caWeddynamicmadianicalanalysis, abbreviated DMA. Dynamic mechanical analysis has developed into such an important thermal analysis technique that a separate course of instruction is needed to do justice to the topic. Only a short summary is given in Sect. 6.6 to serve as an introduction to the field. 

The remainder of Augustine s summary of the end of Book 2 corresponds to 2.70 below. 9° This and the following two fragments have frequently been placed in Book 3 despite explicit attribution to Book 2 they make sense as part of the preparation for the debate on justice that is to follow.
