Journals Thermochimica Acta/Thermal Analysis

The prospects of DSC, have been reviewed in a special issue of Thermochimica Acta, which includes a collection of articles on advances of thermal analysis in the twentieth century and expected future developments [232,235,236]. This journal and the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, where research articles about DSC and its applications are often published, are very useful sources of information on the technique. Although relatively old, the reviews by McNaughton and Mortimer [237] and by Mortimer [238] contain excellent examples of applications of DSC to molecular thermochemistry studies. The analytical uses of DSC, which are outside the scope of this book, can be surveyed, for example, in biannual reviews that appear in the journal Analytical Chemistry [239],... 

Most research papers concerned with pharmaceutical microcalorimetry can usually be found in the pharmaceutical journals International Journal of Pharmaceutics (Elsevier Science Publishers BV, Amsterdam) and Pharmaceutical Research (Plenum Publishing Corporation, New York) while more fundamental work will be found in Thermochimica Acta (Elsevier Science Publishers BV, Amsterdam). Excellent reviews of the field of thermal analysis have been published every two years in the fundamental reviews issue of Analytical Chemistry by the late D Dollimore, most recently in 1998 (43). 

Since the appearance in 1955 of the seminal reviews in "Chemistry of the Solid State", edited by Gamer [1], contributions to the subject have been dispersed in a wide cross-section of often interdisciplinary chemical journals, with a high proportion in Thermochimica Acta and Journal of Thermal Analysis. There have been few reviews compared with the considerable publication output [25]. 

Key research papers in DSC are often presented in Thermochimica Acta and the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry. Progress in DSC is also reported in the Proceedings of the International Conferences on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, ICTAC. The annual Proceedings of the Meeting of the North American Thermal Analysis Society, NATAS, are also a useful source of informadon. 

The simultaneous measurement of the amplitude (modulus) of the complex heat capacity, the heat flow and the phase angle between heat flow and heating rate (termed heat flow phase) enables a more detailed study of complicated material systems, both in quasi-isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The extraction of the signals is briefly summarised below. More details on theory and applications are given in dedicated special issues of Thermochimica Acta [6,7] wid Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorime-try [8] and in other chapters of this book.

Let us make some remarks related to our sprecific field of interest, i.e., thermal science specified as thermal analysis as well as the accompanying thermal treatment [3]. Let us mention only the two most specialized journals. Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (JTAC) and Thermochimica Acta (TCA), which cover the entire field of thenna) analysis and related thermophysical studies, and which naturally belong to a broader domain of Journals concerned with material thermal science [26]. These two journals are members of a general family of about 60 000 scientific Journals that publish annually about 10 papers on 10 pages. The questions then arises as to the appropriate role of such specific journals, and their place among so many presently existing scientific periodicals. The answers to these questions may be useful not only for their Editors, but also for prospective authors trying to locate their articles properly.
