Joining

Many techniques are available for joining ceramics to other ceramics or to metals. The review of ceramic joining by Suganuma et al. and an earlier review by Rice provide a more detailed overview. [Pg.213]

There are three general categories or types of joining processes. In the first, attachment is mechanical and is achieved through the use of mechanical interlocking of components. The second approach is direct joining, in which components are bonded either by a solid-state process or by fusion. The third approach could be referred to as indirect joining in the sense that an intermediate layer of material, such as an adhesive, cement, or braze, is used to bond two components. [Pg.213]

The bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, has a low melting point (less than 1000 °C), and therefore, it could be fusion [Pg.113]

Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774. Edmund Davy produced acetylene in 1800. Linde devised a method for extracting oxygen from liquid air in 1893. Fouche and Picard invented oxyacetylene welding torch in 1903, which could achieve a flame temperarnre of 3250 °C. Since then, gas welding became an economical method for fusion welding of the metals as well as for cutting. [Pg.114]

Post-processing and assembly methods are the operations that determine the final nature of end products. Moulded polyethylene (PE) articles may be subjected to several operations such as joining by welding (friction, vibration, hot gas and hot plate, ultrasonic, radio frequency) or gluing, machining, or decorating (Table 8.1) [1]. [Pg.149]

This method uses a stream of hot gas (air) directed towards the joint between the two thermoplastic parts to be joined, where it softens or melts the polymer. There are variations in technique, including hand welding, speed welding, and extrusion welding. A thermoplastic filler rod can be used to form a weld. Hot gas welding is a manual process and the quality of the bond depends on the skill of the operator. The adjustable parameters are gas type, flow rate, temperature, and the angle of the filler rod of the parts being welded. [Pg.150]

High-frequency (20- 0 kHz) sound energy is used to soften or melt the thermoplastic at a joint. This technique is very fast and can be easily automated. The welds are strong, clean, and reliable. PE do [Pg.150]

One of the unique characteristics of powder metallurgy is the ability to produce porous parts. This has been used to produce metal filters and porous bearings. In the latter case, the sintered part is vacuum treated to remove all air and then submerged in oil to fill the pores. This produces a bearing capable of operating for the life of a product without further application of lubricant. Nonmetal powders are sometimes mixed with metal powders to produce particle metallurgy parts. [Pg.219]

Seaming, employed in sheet metal work, forms a joint by folding the edges of two very ductile metals together to form a seam consisting of two interpenetrating U bends. [Pg.220]

A path is a sequence of distinct lines which are connected to each other. For example, in Fig. 7.1a, AECGD is a path. A graph forms a single component if any two points are joined by a path. Thus Fig. 7.16 has two components and Fig. 7.1a has only one. [Pg.214]

Uquidus curve The freezing point of a molten mixture of substances varies with the composition of the mixture.
