PE is the most widely used mass-produced plastic. The worldwide production of PE at the early 1990s was 40 x 106 metric tons per year. Of this amount 16 x 106 tons were LDPE (low density PE), 8 x 106 were LLDPE (linear LDPE) and the remainder was principally HDPE (high density PE) (LDPE HDPE LLDPE=40 40 20).
