Approximately 10% of interviewees were ambivalent about their level of job satisfaction. Specifically, industrial chemists were more likely than either academic or government and other chemists to express a neutral opinion. Nevertheless, most interviewees were either satisfied or very satisfied with their positions. In sharp contrast, academic chemists were less ambivalent. For example, 16 of the 22 were satisfied or very satisfied with their j obs, while five were very dissatisfied. Only one academic chemist indicated a neutral response. All government and other chemists were either satisfied or very satisfied with their jobs. [Pg.110]

Clearly, the commercial or consultancy laboratory that tests sub-samples of a marketed product worth millions of pounds, or assesses the purity of pharmaceuticals, or analyses forensic samples, must have far higher levels of both accuracy and verifiability than student practical classes. There should, however, always be an effort to produce the most accurate and reliable results within the constraints of the laboratory facilities available, otherwise a lax attitude will produce work of doubtful interpretation that could mislead others, as well as giving little job satisfaction. Several books, which are more suited to the commercial sector, have been written on the quality of laboratory analysis, however some quality assurance practices could be beneficial in the smaller laboratory. A useful open-learning style book on basic concepts of quality in the analytical laboratory has been co-authored by staff at the Laboratory of the Government Chemist (Crosby et ai, 1995). [Pg.200]

Since the GLP projects are more technically challenging and can be more integrated into the overall organization, employee job satisfaction can be improved. This may result in retention of employees in the analytical lab, reducing turnover and decreasing recruitment and training costs. [Pg.164]

My long-term aim is to facilitate change by making better use of my time at work. Improved time management would prevent arrears of work accumulating and would assist in the planning of my workload within the constraints of the unpredictable demands. This in turn, I hope, will lead to increased personal efficiency and enhanced job satisfaction. [Pg.66]

Indeed, in a survey of Japanese white-collar male daytime workers, psychological job stress factors, job satisfaction, and social support were independently associated with a modestly increased risk of insomnia [41], Furthermore, in a population of employees with no reported sleeping problems, 14.3 % developed a sleeping problem during the following year. Stress in the form of a poor psychosocial work environment doubled the risk of developing a sleep problem [42],... [Pg.15]
