The first use of steam power as a replacement for the animal or human power that drove the cane mills occurred in Jamaica in 1768. This first attempt worked only a short time, but steam drive was used successfully a few years later in Cuba. Steam drive for the mills soon spread throughout the world. The use of steam instead of direct firing was soon appHed to the evaporating of the cane juice. [Pg.12]

Full-bodied mms are akowed to ferment from 12 to 20 days, often relying on natural or wild fermentation in which the mash is inoculated by the yeast present in the air and starting materials. These mms are twice-distiked in pot stiks to 140—160° proof. Full-bodied mms are often aged from five to seven years in oakbarrels. Caramel color can also be added to give them a darker color. They are produced in Jamaica, Barbados, Martinique, Trinidad, and Guyana. [Pg.83]

Palladium and platinum are the longest known and most studied of the six platinum metals [1-11], a reflection of their abundance and consequent availability. Platinum occurs naturally as the element, generally with small amounts of the other platinum metals. It was used as a silver substitute by Colombian Indians and first observed there by Ulloa (1736), who called it platina del Pinto ( little silver of the Pinto river ) but the first sample was actually brought to Europe in 1741 by Charles Wood, Assay Master of Jamaica. Palladium was isolated in 1803 by W.H. Wollaston, who was studying the aqua regia-soluble portion of platinum ores (he announced his discovery by an anonymous leaflet advertising its sale through a shop in Soho) and named it after the newly discovered asteroid Pallas [12],... [Pg.173]

Sadly, only about 13 of Rillieux s systems were installed before the Civil War. Most planters had no idea how his apparatus worked and remained suspicious. They were more accustomed to buying slaves than technology and did not adopt Rillieux s evaporator until the 1880s or 1890s. Only then did Rillieux s mechanization of the manually operated Jamaica train have an impact on Louisiana agriculture like that of Eli Whitney s cotton gin. [Pg.40]

For the 13 projects identified from 323 MTBE treatment profiles, MPE treated MTBE with concentrations as high as 100,000 pg/L (JFK International Airport, Jamaica City, New York) and achieved as low as 50 pg/L in groundwater after treatment. Table 24.11 provides a summary of seven projects. [Pg.1013]
