Barrett and coworkers have explored hetero-substituted nitroalkenes in organic synthesis. The Michael addition of nucleophiles to 1-alkoxynitroalkenes or 1-phenylthionitroalkenes followed by oxidative Nef reaction (Section 6.1) using ozone gives a-substituted esters or thiol esters, respectively.41 As an alternative to nucleophilic addition to l-(phenylthio)-nitroalkenes, Jackson and coworkers have used the reaction of nucleophiles with the corresponding epoxides (Scheme 4.4).42 Because the requisite nitroalkenes are readily prepared by the Henry reaction (Chapter 3) of aldehydes with phenylthionitromethane, this process provides a convenient tool for the conversion of aldehydes into ot-substituted esters or thiol esters.

Michael Jackson and Pamela Zave [Jackson96a] clearly point out the difference between effects and operations their framework is not one of refinement. Rather, it is centered on how to structure and compose abstract state changing actions (using Z) and finer-grained protocols (using state machines or other mechanisms) to be confident about the results. Many of those ideas fit into the rules for documenting a refinement.

Yvette Jackson, a Jamaican, graduated with a BSc (special) degree in chemistry (1976), and a PhD in chemistry (1983), from the University of the West Indies, Mona campus (UWI, Mona). Her PhD work, under the supervision of Dr. Vernon G. S. Box, involved synthesis of rotenoids -oxygen heterocycles popularly known for their insecticidal activity. She joined the staff at UWI, Mona, in 1983 as an assistant lecturer. Since then she has done postdoctoral work (1986) and many collaborative summer research stints with Prof. Michael P. Cava and Dr. M. V. Lakshmikantham at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, USA, and has risen up the ranks to professor at the University of the West Indies. Her research interests are in the areas of synthetic organic chemistry and organic reaction mechanisms. 

Michael Jackson, one of the world s most popular singers and performers, who died in 2009 from misuse of a powerful anesthetic to help him sleep. Jackson had a history of abuse of prescription painkillers, caused initially by injuries sustained during a rehearsal accident that set his hair on fire. The inappropriate use of propofol, the drug that killed him, has led authorities to charge Jackson s personal physician with manslaughter.
