Based on a review of this drug (isometheptene mucate) by the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council or other information, FDA has classified the other indication as possibly effective in the treatment of migraine headache. Final classification of the less-than-effective indication requires further investigation. 

Pharmacoiogy Isometheptene mucate acts by constricting dilated cranial and cerebral arterioles, thus reducing the stimuli that lead to vascular headaches. Dichloralphenazone, a mild sedative, reduces the patient s emotional reaction to the pain of both vascular and tension headaches. 

Capsules-. Acetaminophen 325 mg, isometheptene mucate 65 mg, dichloralphenazone 100 mg (I.D.A, Midrin, Migrin-A). 

Midrin is mixture of a mild blood vessel constrictor called isometheptene mucate, a mild sedative called dichloralphenazone, and acetaminophen. It is mostly used to treat mild migraines. Only mild dizziness and skin rash have been reported as side effects.

This interaction has been reported with oral ephedrine, oral isometheptene mucate, intravenous mephentermine, intramuscular metarami-nol, oral phenylpropanolamine, " and oral pseudoephedrine, in patients taking nialamide, phenelzine, " iproniazid, mebana-zine, and pargyline. ... 

A very well-documented, serious, and potentially fatal interaction. Patients taking any of the MAOIs should not normally take any sympathomimetic amine with indirect activity. These include ephedrine, isometheptene mucate, mephentermine, metaraminol, phenylpropanolamine and pseudoephedrine. Direct evidence implicating methylephe-drine and pholedrine seems not to have been documented, but on the basis of their known pharmacology their concurrent use with the MAOIs should be avoided.
