Apatite and other phosphorites constitute a substantial resource of rare earths. The REO content is highly variable and ranges from trace amounts to over 1%. Apatite- [1306-05-4] rich tailings of the iron ore at Mineville, New York, have been considered a potential source of yttrium and lanthanides. Rare-earth-rich apatites are found at the Kola Peninsula, Russia, and the Phalaborwa complex in South Africa. Metal depositors. Metal-depositing bacteria oxidize ferrous iron (Fe ) to ferric iron (Fe ). Ferric hydroxide is the result. Some bacteria oxidize manganese and other metals. Gallionella bacteria, in particular, have been associated with the accumulation of iron oxides in tubercles. In fact, up to 90% of the dry weight of the cell mass can be iron hydroxide. These bacteria appear filamentous. The oxide accumulates along very fine tails or excretion stalks generated by these organisms. [Pg.122]

The final step of the reaction involves the transfer of two electrons from iron-sulfur clusters to coenzyme Q. Coenzyme Q is a mobile electron carrier. In the wetlands of Idaho, the formation of an Fe(III) precipitate (plaque) on the surface of aquatic plant roots (Typha latifolia, cat tail and Phalaris arundinacea, reed canary grass) may provide a means of attenuation and external exclusion of metals and trace elements (Hansel et al, 2002). Iron oxides were predominantly ferrihydrite with lesser amounts of goethite and minor levels of siderite and lepidocrocite.
