Iodine recommended daily allowance

Health Canada has advised consumers against using some products containing iodine (SEAVITE Premium Atlantic Kelp tablets), since these products, when consumed according to the label instructions, can provide 25 times the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of iodine for adults this could lead to serious adverse health consequences (9). The RDA for iodine ranges from 90... [Pg.317]

The daily requirement for iodine in adults is 1-2 /ag/kg body weight. In the U.S., recommended daily allowances for iodine range from 40 to 120 /xg for children, 150 fxg for adults, 220 fxg for pregnancy, and 270 p,g for lactation. Dairy products and fish have relatively high iodine contents. Because of concerns of iodine insufficiency, iodine supplementation has been widely used for prophylaxis and therapy. The most practical form of this supplementation has been addition of iodide or iodate (now preferred) to table salt. In the U.S., such supplementation is optional and iodized salt provides 100 fxg of iodine/g. [Pg.984]

This increased to 100 pg/kg when feed was supplemented with iodine (Jahreis et al., 1999). Mean concentrations in the range 100-300pg-iodine/kg milk were found in more recent studies in Germany (Bader et al, 2005 Preiss et ai, 1997 Schone et ai, 2003 Launer and Richter, 2005) and other European countries, e.g., Denmark (Rasmussen et al., 2000) and Norway (Dahl et ai, 2003)- The German Society of Nutrition s recommended daily allowance (RDA) of iodine for young people and adults is 200 pg iodine (D-A-CH, 2000). Half a liter of milk with lOOpg-iodine/ kg would provide a quarter of the RDA, but half a liter of milk with 200 pg - iodine/kg would provide half... [Pg.162]

There is appreciable variability in the iodine contents of both infant formula and speciafized enteral preparations, with some providing well below and others well above the recommended daily allowances. [Pg.399]

Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic drug that contains substantial amounts of iodine (Figure 95.1). One 200 mg tablet of amiodarone contains 75 mg of iodine and intravenous solutions contain 18.7mg/ml (Wyeth Laboratories, 2003). This amount is quite significant considering that the recommended daily allowance of iodine is 150 meg (Roti and degli Uberti, 2001). It would seem that a patient with a true iodine allergy could potentially react to amiodarone. However, the current medical literature does not report the occurrence of such reactions. There have been four published case reports of patients with documented reactions... [Pg.923]

Generally, seaweed contains high ash content indicating appreciable amounts of minerals. Mineral content of seaweed can account for up to 36% of its dry mass and mineral macronutrients include sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorine, sulfur, and phosphorus whereas the micronutrients include iodine, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, molybdenum, fluoride, manganese, boron, nickel, and cobalt. Among these minerals, calcium holds 4-7% of dry matter. At 7% calcium, a t) ical daily portion size of seaweed (8 g dry weight) provides 560 mg of calcium which is a considerable amount compared to its recommended daily allowance (800-1000 mg) (Anonymous, 2004). In seaweeds, calcium is available as calcium phosphate, and that is more bioavailable than the form of calcium in milk, which is calcium carbonate. [Pg.21]

In small amounts, the fluoride ion (often consumed as NaF) prevents tooth decay. According to the American Dental Association, an adult female should consume 3.0 mg of fluorine per day. Calculate the amount of sodium fluoride (45.24% F) that a woman should consume to get the recommended amount of fluorine. 78. The iodide ion, usually consumed as potassium iodide, is a dietary mineral essential to good nutrition. In countries where potassium iodide is added to salt, iodine deficiency or goiter has been almost completely eliminated. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for iodine is 150 /ig/day. How much potassium iodide (76.45% 1) should you consume to meet the RDA ... [Pg.199]

In the United Kingdom current average dietary iodine intake is approximately 255ng/day, higher than the recommended daily allowance of ISOjig per day. There are wide variations due to contamination of milk and dairy produce due to addition of iodide to cattle feeds and the use of iodophor disinfectants in dairying. Areas of borderline iodine deficiency still exist but goitre prevalence is low. [Pg.326]

The upper limit (UL) for human daily iodine intake recommended by the German, Austrian and Swiss Societies of Nutrition (D-A-CH, 2000) is 500 pg/day. Consumption of only 250 ml of the milk produced during period 4 of the study would result in ingestion of more than 500 pg iodine. As a result of this experiment, the European Food Safety Authority reduced the maximum allowed iodine intake of cows and hens in the EU from lOmg/kg feed to 5mg/kg grain dry matter equivalent (EU, 2003, 2005 EFSA, 2005). [Pg.163]

The daily iodine requirement for prevention of iodine deficient goiter in adults is approximately 1 ig/kg weight, that is 50 to 75 pg/day. An allowance of 150 pg/day is recommended in order to provide an extra margin of safety and to meet increased demands that may be imposed by natural goitrogens under certain conditions... [Pg.11]
