Involutions

A and D transforms C into F. It follows that any projectivity which interchanges two points is an involution. Now, applied to the point B, the same three perspectivities interchange it with E  

The three opposite pairs of sides of a quadrangle meet any line (not through a vertex) in three pairs of an involution, AD) BE) CF).

Scroll compressors are currently used in relatively smaU-sized installations, predominantly for residential air-conditioning (up to 50 kW). They are recognized for low-noise operation. Two scrolls (free-standing, involute spirals bounded on one side by a flat plate) facing each other form a closed volume while one moves in a controlled orbit around a fixed point on the other, fixed scroll. 

The suction gas which enters from the periphery is trapped by the scrolls. The closed volumes move radially inward until the discharge port is reached, when vapor is pressed out. The orbiting scroll is driven by a short-throw crank mechanism. Similar to screw compressors, internal leakage should be kept low, and is occurring in gaps between cylindrical surfaces and between the tips of the involute and the opposing scroll base plate. 

Commercial Equipment Simple cyclones are available in a wide variety of shapes ranging from long, slender units to short, large-diameter units. The body may be conical or cylindrical, and entrances may be involute or tangential and round or rectangular. 

Teeth have an involute profile, a curve that is generated by the rolhng of a straight line over a circle, as shown in Fig. 29-83. Although many cui ves could be used for gear teeth, the involute is the preferred one because it allows the correc t engagement, even when the distance between the centers of the gears is not accurately held. 

The shaving proeess improves surfaee finish, involute profile, and lead, and ean be used to erown the teeth. Shaving with inaeeurate eutters will reduee bobbed aeeuraey, and it eannot improve spaeing or piteh-line runout. The shaving eutter has involute teeth and meshes with the part being shaved, thus improving the finish. 

Straight-lobe compressors, or blowers, as they are commonly called are low-pressure machines. The feature unique to these compressors is that the machines do not compress the gas internally as do most of the other rotaries. The straight-lobe compressor uses two rotors that intermesh as they rotate (see Figure 1-7). The rotors are timed by a set of gears. The lobe shape is either an involute or cyclodial form. A rotor may have either two or three lobes. As the rotors turn and pass the inlet port, a volume of gas is trapped and carried between the lobes and the outer...

K has been found to be constant at 3.2 for cyclones with an involute entrance... 

Gear backlash is the play between teeth measured at the pitch circle. It is the distance between the involutes of the mating gear teeth, as illustrated in Figure 39.17.

The study of ions in gases is a part of physics, while the study of ions involution is classed as chemistry. Although this division seems somewhat arbitrary, the experimental investigation of ionic solutions is carried on almost entirely by electrochemists. The present book is therefore primarily addressed to students of electrochemistry and research workers in this field. To make the book as useful as possible for teaching purposes, problems have been inserted at the ends of many of the chapters. The author hopes that the work will be found suitable for graduate courses and seminars, as well as for individual study.
