In this first volume of Specialist Periodical Reports on Chemical Thermodynamics I have deliberately made no attempt to cover the whole of the field, but rather have chosen to concentrate on what I have called in Chapter 1 primary thermodynamic tables and on the several kinds of measurement that contribute more or less directly to them. These are tables, such as the U.S. National Bureau of Standards Technical Note 270 which superseded Circular 500 , from which the standard equilibrium constants of chemical reactions can be obtained. Except for Chapter 1, which is intended to be an introduction not only to this volume but also to subsequent ones, all of this volume has been written by members of the thermodynamics group of the Division of Chemical Standards of the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington. [Pg.373]

The fuels consumed in the fire were treated wood, penta, and creosote (coal tars). Both are considered combustible liquids, with flash points above 160° F (CC). Vapor conditions within the headspaces of tanks can, however, reach explosive conditions, and the introduction of an ignition source resulted in spontaneous combustion. Under ideal conditions, creosote burns similar to crude oil, and in standard lab burn tests, has an average burn rate of 4 mm/min. Chemical potential can be a very difficult topic to grasp, but any standard textbook of physical chemistry will supply a more complete treatment than that afforded here. A particularly useful introduction to the thermodynamics of solutions and mixtures is Chapter 6 of Basic Chemical Thermodynamics, by E. Brian Smith, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1990. [Pg.546]
