Intraventricular lesions

Administration of HA and its effect on sleep-wakefulness Local application of HA (5, 30 and 60 pg) in the TMN region of cats increased the latency to sleep, increased arousal, and reduced NREM sleep in a site-specific, dose-dependent manner. The highest dose produced the maximal effect, which lasted for 6 h. The HA-induced arousal was completely blocked when the cats were pretreated intraperitoneally with the Hi receptor antagonist mepyramine (Lin et at, 1986, 1988). In rats, intraventricular administration of HA blocked the increase in delta and theta activity (0-6 Hz) in the EEG induced by repeated low-frequency stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation. This effect was blocked if specific thalamic nuclei were lesioned (Tasaka et at, 1993) or by simultaneous administration of an Hi receptor antagonist, but not by an H2 receptor antagonist (Tasaka et at, 1989). Application of HA... [Pg.161]

ECG abnormalities in children who ingested castor beans have been noted by Kaszas and Papp (1960). These include QT interval lengthening, repolarization changes, and intraventricular conduction disturbances. Crompton (1980) later reported on experiments on pigs that experienced hemorrhagic lesions and an abnormal ECG due to ricin. At the present time, no antidotes or effective therapy are available to counteract the effects of ricin. [Pg.504]

High concentration of extracellular potassium (50 mM), which results in cellular depolarization, decreases NGF production by 30% in explanted rat iris (Hellweg et al., 1988). In contrast, elevated potassium levels increase the concentration of rjjRNANGF jjj cultured hippocampal neurons (2 fra et al., 1990). Depolarization produced by electrolytic lesions or systemic intraventricular administration of glutamate receptor agonists produces a rapid rise in mRNA p in vivo (Gall and Isackson, 1989 Zafra et al., 1990 Gall et al., 1991). [Pg.182]
