Dr. Schramm is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada (including serving on the Local Section Executive) and is a member of the American Chemical Society and the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists. He has written more than 60 scientific publications and patents. This is his third ACS book, following Emulsions Fundamentals and Applications in the Petroleum Industry and The Language of Colloid and Interface Science. 

Dr. Miller s research interests center on equilibrium and dynamic phenomena in oil/water/surfactant systems, specifically interfacial stability and behavior of emulsions, microemulsions and foams and their application in areas such as detergency, enhanced oil recovery and environmental remediation. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a member of the American Chemical Society, American Oil Chemists Society, International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He has published numerous research papers and review articles on interfadal phenomena, served on the editorial boards of leading journals in the field, and given invited lectures at conferences, universities and industrial laboratories in many countries. 

He is a member of various Russian, U.S., and other international scientific committees and advisory and editorial boards. He was vice president of the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists during 1986-1988. 

Alexey Scheludko was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, New York Academy of Sciences, Faraday Society in England, and the Kolloid-Gesellschaft in Germany. He was among the founders of the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists and a member of the lUPAC Commission on Colloid and Surface Chemistry. He died in Sofia on 8 May 1995. 

The reviews, with diSerent scopes, offered here are written by leading scientists from all over the world. They are comprehensive, with many references, and they should be very useful for those engaged (both in academia and in industry) in fundamental and applied studies in the area of colloid and interface science. As it proved difficult to arrange the reviews in a particular order, they are presented here according to the time the manuscript was received. Before the reviews, a short biography and summary of selected scientific achievements of Tharwat Tadros is given by Brian Vincent, the immediate past president of the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists.
