Internal symposia, importance

Control of Crushers Lower-grade raw materials, higher energy costs, larger-scale operations, and more complex, capital-intensive plants make automatic control of size-reduction equipment more important (Suominen, 21st International Symposium—Applications of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry, 1011-1018). Benefits are increased productivity, process stability and safety, improved recoveiy of mineral values, and reduced costs [Horst and Enochs, Engineering Mining J., 181(6), 69-171 (1980)]. 

During the 28th International Symposium on Combustion in 2000, Irvine Classman spoke about the importance of research in the area of combustion science to modem society in his Hottel Lecture. In his message he appealed to the combustion community to contribute to the solution of real issues and to be more creative in solving economic, social, and environmental problems. 

The radiopharmaceutical chemistry of rhenium for cancer therapy is a new and developing field. The rapid increase in the numbers of papers concerned with i86, i88Re-compiexes for nuclear medicine unquestionably shows the importance of the chemistry of rhenium complexes, as mentioned by Deutsch in his lecture at the Fourth International Symposium on Technetium in Chemistry and Nuclear Medicine held in Bressanone, Italy in 1994.

The preceding section indicated the importance of corannulene as the smallest member of the family of bowl-shaped, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons modeling the surface of buckminsterfullerene. Surprisingly, despite its obvious significance in relationship to the theory of aromaticity, 8 had not attracted the attention of chemists prior to the first report of its synthesis in 1966." As Barth and Lawton noted ... to the time of our first report, it appears this structure had neither adoriied the jacket or end cover of any book nor served as a symbol of an international symposium. More than that, corannulene does not appear to have been suggested in the chemical literature prior to 1966. 

This book is based on an international symposium on anionic polymerization. The need for such a symposium grew out of discussions between myself and other members of the Polymer Division Executive Committee, about two years earlier. At that time I pointed out that we had not had a symposium dealing with the subject since 1962 Clearly, much new scientific and important technological information had been generated since that time.

A dedicated issue of Chemosphere (26(1-4), 1993) contains contributions from the NATO workshop two additional volumes (Khalil, 1993, 2000) contain a report of the workshop and updates of important topics. Contributions to the ISEB meeting are presented in Oremland (1993). Wuebbles and Hayhoe (2002) reviewed the effects of CH4 on atmospheric chemistry and examined the direct and indirect impact of CH4 on climate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published periodic updates (see, e.g., IPCC, 2001).
