Zone O refers to dry interiors where structural steel is embedded in concrete, encased in masonry, or protected by membrane- or contact-type fireproofing. Under this type of exposure painting is unnecessary. If it is desired to apply paint for aesthetic reasons or on other interior surfaces, one coat of epoxy mastic can be applied to steel, concrete masonry units, masonry block (a block filler is recommended), sheet rock (a sealer is required), wood, polyvinyl chloride, galvanized steel, and many other surfaces.
