Interdisciplinary course

Since the arrival of information technology, biochemistry has evolved from an interdisciplinary role to becoming a core program for a new generation of interdisciplinary courses such as bioinformatics and computational biochemistry. A demand exists for an introductory text presenting a unified approach for the combined subjects that meets the need of undergraduate science and biomedical students.

Borrego and Newswander (2008 124) use the term "cross-disciplinary collaborations which can manifest either in (1) multidisciplinary approaches or (2) truly interdisciplinary approaches. They describe multi-disciplinary collaboration as an experience where die joint work on a common problem leaves the parties involved unchanged whereas interdisciplinary collaboration interact in ways that may later on even result in new fields or disciplines. The authors also point out that mutual engagement and learning are important elements of integrative approaches that enhance successful collaborations across disciplines. Davis (1995) stresses that "truly interdisciplinary courses can help develop comprehensive perspectives (cf op.cit, 125, quoting Lattuca et al. 2004).

University of Applied Science. Independently of their disciplinary background our students showed great interest in the interdisciplinary courses. They were curious to learn about topics outside their usual studies, open to unfamiliar working methods, and willing to get respectfirlly into a dialog between academic cultures. 

For Macedonia, the Computer system engineering and automation (FEIT-KSIA) programme at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, with 7,9% share of interdisciplinary courses and lower female students ratios (from 16% to 22%) was selected as the traditional study case. The Informatics and Computer engineering (FEIT-IKI) programme at the same school that has 17% share of interdisciplinary courses and very high female success ratio was selected as the innovative case study. 

Qualitative analysis can further refine the answers obtained in the quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis in the Serbian case study has shown, for example, that it may not be that the number of interdisciplinary courses attracts female students, but the respectable profession (aspiration to become project leaders or company managers) and ease of finding a well-paid job, along with the support given by their families, friends and society in general .
