Intelligence gathering

Eorensic science laboratories may have different missions and therefore conduct different types of testing on samples (21,22). Eor example, the United States Department of Justice, Dmg Enforcement Administration (DEA) forensic laboratories assist authorities ia criminal intelligence-gathering efforts. As such, DEA chemists routinely analyze both the iUicit dmg and excipient, the material used ia the cutting or diluting of the pure dmg, ia a given specimen. The excipient may provide information as to where the sample was produced.

To summarize, the main differences between firearms examination in a terrorist situation and a non-terrorist situation are that in a terrorist situation more cases tend to be of a serious nature, casework involves a wider variety of firearms and related items, more and larger link reports are required, there are different conditions and more difficulties with scene examination, and there is an intelligence gathering aspect to the work.

Unlike the prescriptive approach, the goal-based methodology enables an assessment and re-assessment of risk as operational experience is gained. The intelligence gathered after system go-live provides powerful lessons from which the safety position can be re-evaluated and further evidenced. A simple prescriptive checklist fails to take these important messages into account.
