Hydrogen (H2) is almost everywhere, but unfortunately it is hard to find it on earth as a separate element. Instead, it is primarily chemically bonded with oxygen in water, with carbon in a range of hydrocarbon fuels and in plants, animals, and other forms of life. Hydrogen bound in water and organic forms accounts for more than 70% of the Earth s surface (Dunn, 2002). Once it is extracted, this colourless, odourless, and tasteless element becomes a useful feedstock to a variety of industrial activities — and a potential fuel sufficient to energise all aspects of society, from homes to electric utilities to business and industry to transportation. [Pg.25]

Hydrogen is a high-quality secondary energy carrier and not an energy source.
