Integrated crop production

This system of integrated crop production places high demands on all aspects of crop production, including the controlled use of pesticides. Development and benefit from integrated pest management systems depend upon the combined efforts of the researcher, development and scouting persons and a highly trained farmer.

Pesticides are considered a necessary evil however, it has been estimated that without their use food expenditure for western families would more than double (Zilberman et al. 1991) and, much worse, food shortage would be more acute in many third world countries about 40% crop production would be lost, according to FAO. The specific influence of exogenous PBRs on crop plants has in some cases already been integrated into the crop production system. Examples of this are the use of chlormeguat chloride in cereal growing, ethephon for influencing the development and maturity of various crops, and mepiguat chloride in cotton. 

The planted tree is the focal point of many factors that play a decisive role in determining the condition of the fruit crop and the quality and quantity of the product. Pest control is only one of the many factors involved. In the overall context of integrated fruit production, and especially in the context of organic fruit production, pest control has to he managed in such a way as to respect and enhance the positive factors in the agricultural ecosystem.
