Insulin pituitary insufficiency

The insulin tolerance test is used in diagnosis of pituitary insufficiency which may lead to secondary failure of the adrenal cortex.

Vasopressin test (L-8-V-P-Sandoz, 5 to 10 u i.m.) was performed in 28 children of both sexes, including the groups mentioned above and additional children. The results obtained are partly illustrated in Fig. 3 In normal children L-8-vasopressin induced a slight rise in plasma insulin this was less marked and of shorter duration in idiopathic pituitary insufficiency and non-existent in genetic GH insufficiency. Blood glucose rose mostly in the control group. FFA decreased. There was little change in serum HGH. 

Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome with progressive thyroid autoimmunity, type 1 diabetes mellitus, amenorrhea, and adrenal insufficiency has been reported in a 51-year-old woman treated with interferon alfa for chronic hepatitis C (545). Pancreas and pituitary gland autoantibodies, which were undetectable before interferon alfa treatment, were present at the time of diagnosis. After withdrawal, she recovered normal thyroid function, but was still insulin dependent with amenorrhea and adrenal insufficiency.
