Instrumented Mixers

The receiver system consists of a preamplifier (Radiation Devices model BBA-1P, bandwidth 3-500 MHz at 15 dB gain and 3 dB noise), a 10 MHz amplifier (F+H Instruments mixer-amplifier, model 39 A/M), and a phase detector (F+H Instruments phase detector 1-30 MHz). [Pg.361]

A microwave pulse from a tunable oscillator is injected into the cavity by an anteima, and creates a coherent superposition of rotational states. In the absence of collisions, this superposition emits a free-mduction decay signal, which is detected with an anteima-coupled microwave mixer similar to those used in molecular astrophysics. The data are collected in the time domain and Fourier transfomied to yield the spectrum whose bandwidth is detemimed by the quality factor of the cavity. Hence, such instruments are called Fourier transfomi microwave (FTMW) spectrometers (or Flygare-Balle spectrometers, after the inventors). FTMW instruments are extraordinarily sensitive, and can be used to examine a wide range of stable molecules as well as highly transient or reactive species such as hydrogen-bonded or refractory clusters [29, 30]. [Pg.1244]

A number of mixing experiments have therefore been used to generate both pulses and CW THz radiation. Among these, diode-based mixers used as upconvertors (that is, heterodyne spectroscopy m reverse ) have been the workliorse FIR instruments. Two such teclmiques have produced the bulk of the spectroscopic results ... [Pg.1247]

In addition to failure as a result of their utihty supply, items of equipment are subject to individual failure through mechanical malfunction. Such items include pumps, fans, compressors, mixers, instruments and control valves. The process upset resulting from such malfunctions (e.g., loss of a reflux pump) may in turn result in emergency conditions and the potential for overpressure. These contingencies should be examined and evaluated. [Pg.130]

The instrument and the procedure to determine the critical binderpowder ratio were developed (Tardos, 1994) based on the above observations. The instrument consists essentially of a low shear mixer, schematically represented in Fig. 14, in which the powder is slowly agitated and the binder is... [Pg.369]

One such test involved the use of a domestic table mixer to detect flours that would suffer gluten separation when used on the plant. The test involved making a standard batter in the mixer and then beating it at maximum speed to see if gluten separation occurred. A table mixer is obviously much cheaper than a precision scientific instrument. Unfortunately for the company concerned, the mixer manufacture modified the speed control system of later versions of the mixer, such that results... [Pg.140]

The traditional HPLC instrument is composed of two different parts the first part separates the components of the sample and the other part accomplishes the detection of the components separated. The part of the HPLC carrying out the separation contains a column, an injection device and the eluent delivery system (pump with filters, degasser and transfer tubing, eventually a mixer for gradient elution). One or more detectors, a signal output device coupled with appropriate software, are responsible for detection and primary data evaluation. Pumps deliver the eluent or the different components of the eluent into the column with a precise, constant and reproducible flow rate. [Pg.42]

The mastication equipment most commonly employed is standard rubber instrumentation such as roll mills, internal mixers, extruders or laboratory devices modeled on them (e.g., a single-rotor internal masticator described by Wilson and Watson (43), die model improved by Kargin and coworkers (11) and the Brabender plastograph). [Pg.30]

MICHAEL LEVIN is President and CEO, Metropolitan Computing Corporation (MCC), East Hanover, New Jersey, specializing in process analytical instrumentation as well as data acquisition and control systems for tablet presses, mixers, roller compactors, and other equipment. Prior to forming MCC in 1985, he was a consultant to pharmaceutical companies such as Merck, Sandoz, and Warner-Lambert. A member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, and the Biomedical Engineering Society, Dr. Levin received the Ph.D. degree (1985) in biomathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle. [Pg.539]
