Instruction modules

As part of establishing a new discipline, the center sponsored the publication of six textbooks in a series entitled Advances in Interfacial Engineering." More than 10,000 copies of these books have been sold. In addition, the center has developed several series of computer-based instructional modules in interfacial engineering, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics. The university has licensed these to a private company for distribution. 

At the same CAI center L. B. Rodewald and G. H. Culp and J. J. La-gowski.88) tried to use the computer to teach organic chemistry. They compiled a course using tutorial and drill-and-practice strategies. The course consists of nine instructional modules ...

Obtaining feedback from students on the use of the ExSite has proven difficult, with students reluctant to complete an on-line survey despite prompting on several occasions. Of the 2% of students who responded with positive comments, all reported that the site was useful, particularly the Macro instruction module. From conversations with students it was evident that many had used the site and found it to be helpful.

The current research focused on a revision of an instructional module, in this case, one that was designed to explore the ecosystems of two nearby ponds. This study is a formative evaluation of the quality (in terms of validity, practicality. 

Our project includes three major components. The first component is a learning community for first-year science majors, especially secondary teaching majors in the sciences and mathematics. The second component is a group of laboratory instructional modules developed for courses across biology, chemistry, and physics using a common piece of nanoscience instrumentation. The modules were an attempt to stress recent research in nanoscience rather than simply repeat other previously developed materials. The third component ineludes internships for upper level students (with a preference given to pre-serviee teaehers) involving module development.

Runaway Reactions Experimental Characterization and Vent Sizing This instruction module describes the ARSST and its operation, and illustrates how this instrument can easily be used to experimentally determine the transient characteristics of mnaway reactions, and how the resulting data can be analyzed and used to size the relief vent for such systems. Rupture of a Nitwaniline Reactor This case study demonstrates the concept of runaway reactions and how they are characterized and controlled to prevent major losses.
