As in 1925, when dozens of workers went insane from tetraethyl lead poisoning, Kehoe was the Ethyl Corporation s key man at a hearing. Patterson was a key critic, and corporate executives looked to Kehoe to give them the ten years they needed. But that was only one half of the logic behind the chemical-imbalance theory. The other half came from studies of reserpine, a drug that was extracted from Rauvolfia serpentina or the Indian snakeroot plant, which had historically been used to treat snakebite, hypertension, insomnia and insanity. In studies of animals, reserpine was reported to induce sedation and to decrease brain levels of norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. Clinical reports indicated that some people became severely depressed when taking reserpine.14 Putting these two findings together, it seemed likely that reserpine made people depressed because it decreased neurotransmitter levels.

I suffer from depression, anxiety, and a fear of leaving my house. I hate my body so much it s insane. I wish I could lose all this weight in a heartbeat, but I know it is not possible. From the Old Dominion University survey it is clear that the students perceptions of Willy s actions in the Admiral Sugar Processing Plant incident shifted dramatically from pre-9/11 to post-9/11. For example, when asked to select the best pre-9/11 descriptor to describe Willy, crazy and insane ranked high however, after 9/11, the students perception shifted away from crazy and insane to terrorist. Likewise, the students pre-9/11 responses on Willy s actions ranked high in madness however, his actions post-9/11 overwhelmingly were described as terrorism .
