Mangipudi et al. [63,88] reported some initial measurements of adhesion strength between semicrystalline PE surfaces. These measurements were done using the SFA as a function of contact time. Interestingly, these data (see Fig. 22) show that the normalized pull-off energy, a measure of intrinsic adhesion strength is increased with time of contact. They suggested the amorphous domains in PE could interdiffuse across the interface and thereby increase the adhesion of the interface. Falsafi et al. [37] also used the JKR technique to study the effect of composition on the adhesion of elastomeric acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives. Results have been presented on one experiment. It involved a 5.659-m vessel containing 1000 kg of butane with a fill ratio of 39%. The vessel s contents were heated to 99°C, which is near but still below the supetheat-limit temperature, producing an internal pressure of 14.6 bar gauge. Vessel failure was then initiated. Measured pressure-time histories indicated that a number of separate pressure pulses occurred. If a stroke patient receives intravenous (IV) thrombolysis, care often continues in the ED until the patient arrives in the ICU. Close monitoring must continue during this time, with special attention to the blood pressure. The blood pressure is most commonly checked via an arm cuff, since the placement of invasive lines (e.g., arterial catheterization) is relatively contraindicated once the patient has received intravenous thrombolysis (unless the situation is emergent and mandates such treatment). The systolic pressure must not exceed 185 mm Hg, and the diastolic pressure limit should be 110 mm Hg. Should the blood pressure exceed these limits, IV antihypertensive agents should be administered. IV pushes of labetolol (10-20 mg over 1-2 minutes) may be effective, but if patients are refractory to these initial measures then a continuous infusion of labetolol (0.5-2.0 mg/minute), nicardipine (5-15 mg/hour), or nitro-prusside (0.25-10 mg/kg/minute) may be necessary to keep the patient s blood pressure within the range. Toxaphene elimination rates vary between species. In rats, the half-time persistence of toxaphene (time to 50% excretion = Tb 1/2) was 1 to 3 days (USEPA 1980a). If the trend persisted, virtually all toxaphene would be eliminated in five half-lives. Elevated blood toxaphene levels in a human subject who had eaten catfish fillets containing 52 mg of toxaphene/kg dropped 67% in 11 days. By 14 days after the initial measurement, toxaphene blood levels were below analytical detection limits (USEPA 1980a). Persistence seems to be longer in some fishes.
