In some circumstances, the reaction rates may not be exactly parabolic, and even initially parabolic rates may be influenced by changes within the oxide scale with time. As an oxide scale grows, the build-up of inherent growth stresses, externally applied strains and chemical changes to either oxide scale or metal may all compromise the initial protection offered by the scale, leading to scale breakdown and ultimately partial or complete loss of protection paralinear, or linear kinetics may ensue. The stress level of 5kV/mm is sufficient to observe the onset of deterioration within the duration of experiment of 3000 h. At this level of stress, the complete breakdown did not occur (except one case), but the decay could be followed as a function of time. In saline solution, 5 out of 8 (62.5%) untreated samples showed the initiation of the deterioration within 1000 h. This value for plasma polymer-coated samples dropped to 2/8 (25.0%) for plasma polymer of methane and 1/8 (12.5%) for plasma polymer of (C2F6 + H2). We have studied the the fracture properties of such elastic networks, under large stresses, with initial random voids or cracks of different shapes and sizes given by the percolation statistics. In particular, we have studied the cumulative failure distribution F a) of such a solid and found that it is given by the Gumbel or the Weibull form (3.18), similar to the electrical breakdown cases discussed in the previous chapter. Extensive numerical and experimental studies, as discussed in Section 3.4.2, support the theoretical expectations.
