Provocative Inhalation challenge has been used in an attempt to identify byssinogenic agents (52-54, 83-86). Results of these studies have been Inconclusive, but most positive reactions appear to be due to endotoxin contamination of the dust, or to a toxic or irritant factor (52,53). 

Preparation of cotton bract extracts. Figure 1 is a flow chart showing our procedures for preparing the various bract extracts. Dried bracts (frost killed) were hand picked just prior to harvest from cotton fields in the Lubbock, Texas area. These were stored at room temperature. Extracts were freeze-dried and stored at -4°C. For inhalation challenge by our subjects each extract was reconstituted with water or saline, as indicated, at a concentration equivalent to the standard crude extract. This Insured that for challenge purposes components were not concentrated as purification progressed.

The C02 inhalation challenge and sodium lactate infusion challenge paradigms show high specificity for panic disorder but less sensitivity than the cholecystokinin (CCA) or methyl-chlorophenylpiperazine (niCPP) challenge tests, which are also able to provoke panic symptoms and anxiety in health volunteers. Flumazenil a benzodiazepine antagonist can provoke panic attacks in some panic disorder patients but with lower sensitivity than sodium lactate infusion, C02 or CCK.

A 46-year-old woman with vocal cord dysfunction associated with exposure to eucalyptus underwent inhalation challenges consisting of water, ammonia, pine oil, and a combination of eucalyptus (dried leaves) and ammonia. Vocal cord dysfunction occurred within minutes of exposure to eucalyptus.
