Infrared combined with different methods

Infrared Spectroscopy (ir). Infrared curves are used to identify the chemical functionality of waxes. Petroleum waxes with only hydrocarbon functionality show slight differences based on crystallinity, while vegetable and insect waxes contain hydrocarbons, carboxyflc acids, alcohols, and esters. The ir curves are typically used in combination with other analytical methods such as dsc or gc/gpc to characterize waxes. [Pg.318]

To detect adulteration of wine. Bums et al. (2002) found that the ratios of acetylated to p-coumaroylated conjugates of nine characteristic anthocyanins served as useful parameters to determine grape cultivars for a type of wine. Our laboratory utilized mid-infrared spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis to provide spectral signature profiles that allowed the chemically based classification of antho-cyanin-containing fruits juices and produced distinctive and reproducible chemical fingerprints, making it possible to discriminate different juices. " This new application of ATR-FTIR to detect adulteration in anthocyanin-containing juices and foods may be an effective and efficient method for manufacturers to assure product quality and authenticity. [Pg.497]

IR spectroscopy is not a very sensitive analytical tool and is, therefore, not well suited to the detection of small amounts of material. If, however, intermediates have intense and well-resolved IR absorptions, the progress of their chemical transformation can be followed by IR spectroscopy [83,88,91-93], Near-infrared spectroscopy, in combination with an acousto-optic tunable filter, can be sufficiently sensitive to enable the on-bead identification of polystyrene-bound di- and tripeptides, even if the peptides have very similar structures (e.g., Leu-Ala-Gly-PS and Val-Ala-Gly-PS) or differ only in their amino acid sequence (e.g., Leu-Val-Gly-PS and Val-Leu-Gly-PS) [94]. Special resins displaying an IR and Raman barcode have been developed, which may facilitate the deconvolution of combinatorial compound libraries prepared by the mix-and-split method [48]. [Pg.11]

A feasible solution for this complex challenge is to implement at least two analytical methods with which the course of the reaction can be followed a fast first method that allows qualitative control of the status of the catalyst performance and a second accurate, and in most cases more time consuming, analysis method that will allow a detailed evaluation of catalyst performance. The two analysis methods can be run on one analytical unit, e.g. a gas chromatograph with two different analysis protocols, or separate analytical units such as a gas chromatograph for accurate performance evaluation in combination with a non-dispersive infrared unit for fast qualitative analysis. [Pg.45]

A quite different approach to radiofrequency, microwave and infrared spectroscopy is that known as Fourier transform (FT) spectroscopy. As we shall see, this method of recording the spectra of transient molecular species is particularly appropriate in combination with the use of pulsed gas nozzles. For this reason it has proved to be a powerftd technique for the study of weakly bound dimer complexes formed in supersonic gas expansions. It has, however, also been used for the study of diatomic molecules, both... [Pg.703]

From comparison of temperatures measured by different methods, this temperature fluctuation scheme led to conclude that temperature fluctuations are common in nebulae, with typical values of t2 = 0.03 - 0.05 (see references in Peimbert 1996, Stasinska 1998, Mathis et al. 1998, Esteban 2002). The case is not always easy to make the determination of the continuum in the vicinity of the Balmer jump is difficult, the combination of data from different instruments for the comparison of far infrared data with optical ones involves many potential sources of errors, lines of 0++ and of H are not emitted in coextensive zones etc. .. Nevertheless, the observational results seem overwhelming. And, as noted by Peimbert (2002), the value of t2 found in such a way is never negative ... [Pg.132]

Since all polymeric intermediates, and in many instances also the final ceramics, are amorphous, only thermal and spectroscopic methods can be utilized to characterize the thermal conversion. The most extensive studies have been performed on the polymer N-methylpolyborosileizane (PBS-Me), made from the single source precursor TADB. The pyrolysis has been monitored in situ by differential thermal analysis combined with thermo-gravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry (DTA/TG/MS). For ex situ investigations, batches of the polymer were treated at different temperatures, cooled to room temperature, and characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. [Pg.166]

Fourier transform infrared difference spectroscopy has enormous potential. It represents a nondestructive method working at the molecular level, so the amount of material required is relatively small (40-100 fig). This enables its combination with other techniques in molecular biology. More theoretical and experimental advances are indeed possible. A theoretical means for interpreting the observed small changes of the amide I bands needs to be developed. The practical realization of the method of site-directed labeling (i.e., the incorporation of one labeled amino acid at a specific site) would represent a major breakthrough. [Pg.526]

The traditional method of noise subtraction has been revived and used very effectively for ion spectroscopy.°9 The laser beam is split into two parts, one for spectroscopy and the other for reference and detected by two matched infrared detectors. The signals from the two infrared detectors are elctronically combined with opposite phase to subtract noise. This method is particularly effective for a color center laser and a difference frequency laser system where the... [Pg.372]
