A very interesting calculation has been carried out by N. Bjerrum (Zeitschr. Elektrocliem., 1911 Nernst Festschrift, 1912) in which the rotational energy is connected with the frequencies of the infra-red absorption bands of a gas. The results established in the preceding paragraph may be verified by comparing the thermodynamic properties and the spectroscopic properties of associated solutions. Let us consider, for example, a solution of ethanol in carbon tetrachloride. The valency vibration of the OH group gives rise to two distinct infra-red absorption bands depending upon whether the OH group is in a monomer or in an associated complex. The rates of loss do not correlate with the rates of increase in the hydroxyl index for these systems or with the photoyellowing and uv phenomena. This indicates that the mechanism of oxidation of the amine functionality is complex. An additional feature of interest is the profile of this band loss as related to terminal amine structure. In the simple alkyl substituted systems namely diethyl, dimethyl and dibutyl there is an initial rapid loss followed by a slowing down of the rate of decrease on prolonged irradiation. However, with the oxygen containing systems namely morpholine, N-ethyl ethanolamine and N-methyl ethanolamine the rate of decrease is linear with irradiation time. Evidently, there must be two different mechanisms in operation here. The loss of these infra-red absorption bands may be due to a process of dealkylation via oxidation (see reactions later). The band situated at 2978 cm"l exhibited similar behaviour although the extent of the loss was less than that observed with the previous band and the order of rate loss was marginally different. [Pg.356]

The relaxation of stress-induced dichroism of the 9000nm O infra-red absorption band was investigated in samples of Czochralski material which had been annealed in H plasma at 225 to 350C. It was found that the in-diffusion of H enhanced the rate of O diffusion, so that dichroism disappeared gradually from the external surfaces. The swelling, crazing, and cracking behavior of PMMA, PVC, and PSU in contact with some 70 different liquids was analyzed by Vincent and Raha [123]. They considered not only the solubility parameter 65 but also the value of the hydrogen bonding parameter Hqd based on the displacement of the OD infra-red absorption band in CH3OD in presence of the particular liquid and benzene. Better (but still no unique), correlation between the mode of failure and 63 and Hqd was obtained. [Pg.292]
