A CE process is multi-functional, multi-disciplinaiy or multi-site, requiring collaboration between different disciplines, functions and roles. This process requires continuous effort as the fire hose of information flows your way. No one has found the perfect answer to fully manage and control this flood of information. However, as part of any process, an ongoing effort is needed to keep your citations, references, and library of information organized. To remain effective and current, a knowledge and information management process is part of the core of any true safety management system. 

The Information Management Process involves the following tasks ... 

Laboratory Information Management System. The QC lab must analy2e raw material, in-process, and finished product samples adhere to cahbration schedules record data and perform statistical analyses. These activities lend themselves to the appHcation of software packages such as a laboratory information management system (LIMS) (qv). An inexpensive LIMS is within the reach of even small laboratories. 

This control activity is primarily concerned with determining what products will be made in the batch plant and when those products will be made. This requires the control activity to interface with the process management, recipe management, and information management control activities. 

In quality management terms, the customer is the next person in an activity or management process, including, of course, the traditional customer who receives the final product. Each person is supplied with information, equipment, product or raw material which must be worked on and then passed to the next customer for further refinement. Thus an activity or management process consists of a series of suppliers and customers. For PSM and ESH integration, customers include people such as ESH staff, operating staff and individuals to be trained. 

Don t expend too much time trying to identify PSM and ESH management processes. They may not exist, be very informal or vary dramatically from department to department. 

A When we introduced ISO 9000 a few years ago we negotiated agreements with the relevant unions. These agreements anticipated that ISO 9000 would eventually be applied to all our management processes. However, as we have done throughout the implementation of ISO 9000, we will make sure union officials are fully informed on our proposals and the progress of the project. The trade union officials are the representatives of our most important stakeholder—our employees. 

The assessment provides substantial information on the existing systems. Since it is not possible to redesign the entire integrated system simultaneously, you should start with the management processes, as these are the drivers. 

There are some aspects of process design in which decisions are based primarily on past experience rather than on quantitative performance models. Problems of this type include the selection of constraction materials, the selection of appropriate models for evaluating the physical properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures of components, and the selection of safety systems. Advances in expert systems technology and information management will have a profound impact on expressing the solutions to these problems.
