Chemical manufacturing processes information management

Title I - Control of Toxic Substances - includes provisions for testing chemical substances and mixtures, manufacturing and processing notices, regulating hazardous chemical substances and mixtures, managing imminent hazards, and reporting and retaining information.

Step 3. If the decision in Step 2 is to proceed with fifing an application for an LVE or LoREX exemption, the MRC shall gather information sufficient to describe the substance s chemical identity, physicochemical properties, manufacturing, processing and use information, test data, other data, and optional pollution prevention information. The MRC shall request information from the Product Manager, Production Manager, suppliers in the case of LVE or LoREX substances to be imported, suppliers and manufacturers of precursors and in-house or external chemists as necessary to conclusively determine... 

In addition to the publicly available standards provided by professional bodies, many of the larger companies have their own internal standards. Generally, these internal standards are based on public standards but have additional requirements—often to do with specific aspects of their own processes or operations. For example, if a company manufactures a unique and proprietary chemical, management may need to create standards to do with the safe handling of that chemical, since little information is likely to be available in the public domain. 

The CCPS, a section of the AIChE, released a how-to book [26] entitled Plant Guidelines for Teehnical Management of Chemical Process Safely in 1992. It contained practical appendices on inspection and test procedures. These appendices comprise the practices at major chemical manufacturing facilities. Chapter 8 should be consulted for speeifie information and actual plant programs. 

By US law, every worker must be informed about the potential dangers of the chemicals that they encounter in the workplace (OSHA - Hazard Communication Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200). This includes common chemicals, such as household dishwasher soaps. It is the responsibility of managers to keep workers informed about the chemicals being used and their potential hazards. Chemical manufacturers must provide users with MSDSs on all their chemicals. These MSDSs must be made available to all workers. There are MSDSs on aU kinds of chemical, ranging from the toner used in copiers, to common household detergents, to really hazardous chemicals such as hydrofluoric acid (HF).
