Information architecture (lA) has its origins in library science and is concerned with the modeling of information and the application of that model to the structure of user interfaces. The lA establishes a structure for accomplishing tasks with the interface. As such, it is not just apphcable to human interaction with bioinformatics or information management systems but for any interaction needed to perform an activity.

Each country had its own way of classifying information. Supply chain, ERP and CRM systems, for example, had different ways of classifying products and customers from country to country. Companies and countries have different cultures, different ways to run the business , notes Monica Parisi, information architecture manager at Unilever Latin America in San Paolo, Brazil. 

The dot-com boom attracted a few talented and largely self-taught professionals into the HCI fold. In the second half of the nineties, many of the early multimedia companies had evolved into mature web and e-learning operations with active interface design and information architecture groups. Some of these would have been at the implemented level of UMM, while others at the considered level. Around this time, international companies set up software development centres in India. Some of these also set up usability groups, consistent with their organizational structures elsewhere. Many of these companies would be at the implemented level of UMM. 

In a supply network, a critical issue is how to coordinate the decisions made by multiple companies. The coordination scheme plays an important role in integrating the network, and it requires sharing of information across boundaries. Two of the key determinants of coordination structure are the decision rights and information architecture. 

To summarise then, different information is contained in diffnent places for and by, different people. Designing a DSS with an underlying information architecture for supporting disuibuted, multi-user access is a difficuk problem. Version control and consistency management are also iion-trivial.
