Industrial Inquiry Service

PLASTEC is one of 20 information analysis centers sponsored by the Department of Defense to provide the defense community with a variety of technical information services applicable to plastics, adhesives, and organic matrix composites. For the last 21 years, PLASTEC has served the defense community with authoritative information and advice in such forms as engineering assistance, responses to technical inquiries, special investigations, field trouble shooting, failure analysis, literature searches, state-of-the-art reports, data compilations, and handbooks. PLASTEC has also been heavily involved in standardization activities. In recent years, PLASTEC has been permitted to serve private industry. 

Data on quantities and characteristics of waste water, both sewage and industrial, are available in the journal Sewage and Industrial Wastes 22) pubHshed by the Federation of Sewage and Industrial Wastes Associations, Champaign, Illinois. No regular statistical services are carried on, although general service inquiries are handled for members and nonmembers. 

Knowledge about the dyes used to color certain products can be helpful. For example, the dyes used to color sheer nylon hosiery are known to include Disperse Yellow 3, Disperse Red 1, Disperse Red 13, Disperse Red 17, Disperse Orange 3, Disperse Blue 3, Disperse Blue 14, and Disperse Blue 124 (Balato et al. 1990a Berger 1984). Because the dyes used differ from country to country and change over time due to fiber and dyestuff development, an inquiry to a trade association servicing the industry would prove useful. Those with an interest in science and the military will find opportunities for work in government, private industry, and the academic world. A number of individuals involved in research and development for the military are members of the armed forces, often with specialized training that permits them to supplement their battlefield knowledge with classroom and laboratory preparation to carry out sophisticated scientific inquiry. Since the eighteenth century, governments have established and sponsored military academies to prepare officers for practical applications of military science and engineering, but individuals educated in other institutions can often receive commissions in the services and perform these roles.

However it was not that the legislation was unimportant. The Conciliation Act (1896) and the Industrial Court Act (1919) provided the basis for a whole range of state agencies and services in the fields of conciliation, arbitration, mediation and inquiry, and these services were valued by the practitioners of their day. Yet the essence of these services were that they were largely voluntary, except of course for Committees and Courts of Inquiry where a certain minimum amount of compulsion was available if necessary, and whether or not people used the services or not was entirely up to the parties themselves.
