Comtet s two-volume work on combinatorics [ComL70] appeared in 1970. It contained an account and proof of Polya s Theorem together with all the necessary preliminaries — definitions of cycle-index, Burnside s Lemma, and so on. Comtet illustrated Polya s Theorem by a single example, the coloring of the faces of a cube. [Pg.103]

The principal advances in the systematization of organic nomenclature have come from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Commission on the Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry, and from the Chemical Abstracts Service. The IUPAC Definitive Rules for Hydrocarbons and Heterocyclic Systems (1957)4 and for Characteristic Groups (1965)5 have been widely accepted by the chemical community, and, in their latest revised form,6 constitute the standard reference work. These rules are closely related to those developed in parallel by Chemical Abstracts for indexing purposes, and it is fortunate that, as a result of close cooperation between the two bodies, there are few areas of disagreement. [Pg.178]

In the present work, the general mathematical scheme of construction of the equilibrium statistical mechanics on the basis of an arbitrary definition of statistical entropy for two types of thermodynamic potential, the first and the second thermodynamic potentials, was proposed. As an example, we investigated the Tsallis and Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical entropies in the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. On the example of a nonrelativistic ideal gas, it was proven that the statistical mechanics based on the Tsallis entropy satisfies the requirements of the equilibrium thermodynamics only in the thermodynamic limit when the entropic index z is an extensive variable of state of the system. In this case the thermodynamic quantities of the Tsallis statistics belong to one of the classes of homogeneous functions of the first or zero orders. [Pg.329]

Collection Mechanism The trusty index card will work for performing inspections, but this requires the individual to remember the inspection criteria or refer to an inspection list and make notes about observations. A clipboard with a predefined set of questions (that can be answered yes or no ) for each machine is a definite improvement on the index card method. Be sure to leave a space for comments. Both the index card and the clipboard approach require manual entry of the data once they are collected. A more modern approach is to set up the inspection in an industrial-quality personal digital assistant. For each machine, the inspector can answer yes or no, and as required, write short comments. These comments could be selected from a drop-down menu to minimize inconsistency. The data can then be uploaded to a host computer for storage. In one sense, however, the present index is not complete, for it makes no effort to specify the many other kinds of companies that employ organic chemists. On the basis of a definite analogy between e tx and F-centers we may expect the appearance under certain conditions of (e tr)2- particles of the type of F -centers. From the polaron model (57) it follows that the bipolaron (two electrons localized in a common polarization well) can not exist. In accordance with the work of Vinetskii and Giterman (63), in some cases the formation of the bipolarons becomes energetically possible in the result of interaction of the polarization wells of two separate polarons. However, the saving in energy for such bipolaron states is not large and hence they will not be stable in liquids under room temperature. Actually, up to the present time a series of attempts have been made to detect (e aq)2 in the irradiated liquid water but these attempts were not successful. The polaron theory (57) predicts that F -centers (two electrons in the anionic vacancy) may be stable. For this it is necessary that the ratio e/n2 (e and n2 are the static and optical dielectric constants, n—refraction index) should be more than 1.5. Evidently, in the glassy systems under consideration this requirement is fulfilled. [Pg.24]
