INDEX warning

Perhaps the best site is that of Amnesty International at http //www.amnesty.org. Its page http //web.amnesty.orgAibrary/eng-313/index cites many dozens of case studies, a significant fraction of which involve electricity. Or type electricity into their search engine (almost hidden at the foot of the page), and be shocked at the number of so-called friendly and civilized countries that employ torture Israel, Indonesia, the USA, and many of the new countries of Europe. Be warned some of the details are horrific - electricity is a very efficient way of generating pain. [Pg.551]

Clinicians must learn to appreciate the value of toxicovigilance. This means that preventive activities for poisoning, such as education of the patient and family or peers, could be done. Informing responsible authorities of an index poisoning case could lead to better and concerted epidemiological investigations and perhaps lead to better health warnings and policy modifications. [Pg.280]

Warnings (i) The Tpq do not form a second-rank tensor and so unitary transformations must be carried out using the four-index notation Tijki. (ii) The contraction of TiJki may be accompanied by the introduction of numerical factors, for example when 7(4) is the elastic stiffness (Nye (1957)). [Pg.284]

The role of the nonmedical therapist is not to make definitive medical diagnoses, but rather to be alert to certain warning signs that may signal the presence of a physical illness or that at least increase one s index of suspicion. Obviously, when a medical illness is suspected, a referral to a physician or emergency medical facility is in order. [Pg.53]

A chemical name should not be a phrase. In the early days of chemistry prior to the general acceptance of atomic and subsequent theories, many substances were characterized by clumsy and inconvenient expressions derived from various associations. Examples of these would include "oil of vitriol, "butter of antimony, "cream of tartar, "flowers of zinc, "liver of sulfur, "milk of lime, "sugar of lead, "spirits of nitre, etc. Very possibly de Morveau anticipated the probability that the substances designated by such names would occasionally, by careless classification, become indexed under "oil "butter, "cream, "flowers, "liver, "milk, and "sugar, and thus be withdrawn from the chemist to the kitchen. Despite his warning, however, chemical names were frequently rendered as phrases for the next one hundred years and such forms as "acetate of sodium, "peroxide of hydrogen, and "permanganate of potash have only recently disappeared from texts and books of reference. [Pg.49]

The FOI Online Web site (cited previously) also enables keyword searching of a huge retrospective collection of FDA Warning Letters, as well as FDA Guidance documents. Both of these compilations complement those offered on the FDA web site. Since the database supplier is also a document delivery service, the online file serves as a catalog of materials stored in-house after being obtained through Freedom of Information Act provisions. This means that items not separately listed or readily searchable on the FDA Web site are indexed at FOI Online. For example, the database provides separate... [Pg.124]

Preparation of anhydrous oxalic acid. W. T. Ford confirms a warning in the Merck index that dehydration of the dihydrate by heating it in an oven at 100° may be harmful to the oven. [Pg.427]

Normally this kind of twinning is detected at the diffractometer, because the automatic cell determination programs fail or have problems. Split reflection profiles or un-indexed reflections are typical warning signs (Figure 7.9). [Pg.115]

The Merck Index, an annual encyclopedia of chemicals and drugs, states for Lewisite Caution Extremely toxic Produces severe vesication, even through rubber. If left on skin, as little as 0.5 ml may give rise to sufficient absorption to produce severe systemic effects 2 ml may cause death. (Similar warnings do not accompany the other war gases.)... [Pg.196]

The hit quality index (HQI) ranks the candidate reference spectra by their similarity to the unknown spectrum. As warned above it is not wise to take the hit list ranked by HQI at face value but to look down the hit list where it may well be possible to find what a human expert would regard as a better candidate solution to the search than the algorithm has picked out. [Pg.1089]
