Selection of a name for a specific compound is heavily influenced by the purpose at hand communication to a general audience, communication with specialists, or storage/retrieval through archival indexes. The first requires the simplest rules possible the second requires the shortest names possible and the third requires rigid adherence to a set of rules that will reliably generate a unique name. The name chosen may be different for each situation, although that is not necessarily so. [Pg.35]

As mentioned earlier, unmodified polystyrene first found application where rigidity and low cost were important prerequisites. Other useful properties were the transparency and high refractive index, freedom from taste, odour and toxicity, good electrical insulation characteristics, low water absorption and comparatively easy processability. Carefully designed and well-made articles from polystyrene were often found to be perfectly suitable for the end-use intended. Aqueous soap solutions can be obtained in three distinct forms, the sol form containing the ionic micelle, a clear gel, and a white opaque solid the curd. The sol and gel forms of various soaps have been examined by McBain and his co-workers and shown to differ only in elasticity and rigidity, whilst the electrical conductivity, refractive index, concentration of metallic ion and lowering of the vapour pressure are all identical, results to be anticipated on the fibrillar theory.
