Several multivariable controllers have been proposed during the last few decades. The optimal control research of the 1960s used variational methods to produce multivariable controllers that rninirnized some quadratic performance index. The method is called linear quadratic (LQ). The mathematics are elegant but very few chemical engmeering industrial applications grew out of this work. Our systems are too high-order and nonlinear for successful application of LQ methods. [Pg.606]

A practical method is the one proposed by Zhang and Soong (1992), who suggested a sequential procedure to find the optimal placement of viseoelastic dampers, based on the controllability index method presented by Cheng and Pantelides (1988). The procedure consists in adding dampers one by one to the structure in the story where the optimal location index is maximiun, assuming that all the dampers have the same size. An alternative procedure is the dynamic programming method of Bellman (1957) which is based on the principle of optimality and the imbedding approach. The principle of optimality yields the Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equation, whose solution results in an optimal control policy. Euler-Lagrange and Pontrya-gin s equations are applicable to systems with non-linear, time-varying state equations and non-quadratic, time varying performance criteria. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation is usually solved for the important and special case of the linear time-invariant plant with quadratic performance criterion (called the performance index), which takes the form of the matrix Riccati (1724) equation. Sample preparation, injection, calibration, and data collection, must be automated for process analysis. Methods used for flow injection analysis (FLA) are also useful for reliable sampling for process LC systems.1 Dynamic dilution is a technique that is used extensively in FIA.13 In this technique, sample from a loop or slot of a valve is diluted as it is transferred to a HPLC injection valve for analysis. As the diluted sample plug passes through the HPLC valve it is switched and the sample is injected onto the HPLC column for separation. The methods just presented can be used for any number of variables. However, optimizing all the possible variables of a plant in one massive optimization is a Herculean task. The usual approach is to reduce the number of variables to those that strongly affect the performance index. For instance, in the polystyrene example the cost of electricity is almost insignificant and can be ignored. However, the amount of water added to the reactor may be very important. An optimization is made for the major variables. Then the effects of the minor variables are considered either in groups or separately. [Pg.409]
