It is quite clear, then, that a very high viscosity index liquid is desirable from the hydraulic designer s point of view, the higher the better. 

Cj 0H7I] could be used as a high index liquid, the dispersion of which is also indicated in Figure 4.

A set of refractive index liquids can be purchased from R. P. Cargille Laboratories. You could make up your own set of liquids and calibrate them on a reffactometer, but if you do a great amount of microscopy 1 highly recommend buying a set of calibrated liquids. 

Refractive index liquids have another use besides identification. They can help get rid of the major component of a sample so we can more easily see the impurities. If a gypsum specimen is mounted in liquid that does not match, such as 1.600 RI (Fig. 6), we can see the gypsum crystals, but we already know there is a lot of gypsum in the specimen. What we want to see is how much other junk is there. Now if we mount the gypsum in a liquid with a 1.528 Rl (Fig.

The sample is initially examined under a zoom stereo microscope, individual fibres are carefully removed from the sample matrix and placed into an appropriate refractive index liquid to be examined.

By submerging the silica-alumina pellets in a high refractive index liquid (carbon tetrachlorideX they are rendered transparent, and the coke profiles for various temperature levels can be observed, as shown in Fig. 2.
