Imponderable bodies

The arrangement of the System is first into imponderable bodies and ponderable bodies, the latter being divided into simple supporters of combustion and simple combustibles, the combustibles being acidifiable or alkalifiable then follow compounds of various classes, theoretical sections on affinity and states of aggregation, and accounts of meteorology, minerals, and vegetable and animal chemistry. The treatment is mostly historical, which Thomson says lends interest and assists the memory of the student. 

The amounts of ointments and creams people apply are highly individualized. So are the techniques of application. Some patients vigorously rub semisolid formulations into the skin, while others just spread films until they are more or less uniform over the desired area. While pharmacokinetic assessments of a system s delivery attributes is ordinarily done using normal skin (in vitro) or on healthy volunteers (in vivo), the site of its clinical deployment is usually anything but normal. Rather, it is determined by the skin condition to be treated. Clearly, the manufacturer is without control over how a disease is expressed in a particular patient. For many diseases, disease manifestation can be anywhere on the body. Moreover, from individual to individual it varies in intensity and vastness. Thus, more area may be involved in one case than in another, and the barrier function of the skin may be more or less intact in any instance. This creates a set of imponderables with respect to delivery, efficacy, and safety. 

Nature and Properties op Caloric,—Of the three imponderables—calorie, light, and electricity— calorie is that which produces the sensation of heat or warmth in animal bodies. It exists, however, in considerable quantities, even whan it cannot be distinguished by this teBt. 

So most atoms are ancient. They have existed through imponderable ages, recycling through the universe in innumerable forms, both nonliving and living. In this sense,you don t "own the atoms that make up your body—you are simply their present caretaker. There will be many caretakers to follow. 

Since heat is imponderable and not directly observable, it is necessary to measure the size of a given quantity of heat by its effect on another hody. If this effect is the production of a rise in temperature from some iniliul temperature, q. to a final temperature, t. then the rise it - i, > is found to vary inversely w ith the mass of the test body, it is thus natural, following the calorists. to regard the quantity ol heat, say Q. as determined by the product of m and (t — I I. When two similar bodies are equally hot or cold to the touch, they have the same temperature, which remains unaltered if we bring the bodies into contact. On the other hand, a gradual change in temperature takes place if we bring into contact two or more similar bodies which do not feel equally hot or cold, i.e. have not the same temperature. The bodies which were hotter at the beginning cool down, while the colder bodies become warmer, until, ultimately, all have attained the same temperature. We conclude from this that the colder bodies take up heat, and that the warmer bodies give out heat, or that, heat flows from places of high temperature to places of low temperature. For this reason, heat was considered to be fluid in nature for many years. It was looked upon as a substance with the properties of an imponderable fluid, which permeated... 

Besides man is composed of tissues and organic liquids penetrated by an imponderable element called consciousness . Now the living body sum of tissues and organic liquids has its own existence linked to a regular affinity to the contingent universe. Can we not then suppose... 

The edge of nonexistence is the threshold of the outside, where the dichotomies of sense and non-sense are not yet operative, where there is no-thing, only bodies and flows. This edge, the verge of race, is the absence of the interracial occult, the supplement that cannot be comprehended by racial reason. It is the night in which the outline of the signified thing vanishes and where only the imponderable affect is carried out (10). 

Although we have thus rendered it probable, that the molecules of bodies considered at present as elementary, are immediately compounded of many others, more or less resembling them. . . there must be a point at which these, and other elements, exist in a primary or ultimate form and beyond which, if they can be supposed to be subdivided, they must become something altogether different.. . . Indeed, such submolecules may be imagined to resemble in some degree, the imponderable matters, heat, c., not only by their extreme tenuity, but in other characters also. ... 

In every other active tissue and organ of the body, metabolism and function can be correlated. But the brain, silent and motionless, traffics with the imponderable. That the brain requires an abundance of oxygen is inferred from the elaborate arterial supply.
